Who is known as “The Greatest Indian” !!

We all know, who is “Father of Nation” but tell me who is known as The Greatest Indian !! Ok if you don’t know guess any name like Mahatma Gandhi, APJ Abdul Kalam, Vallabhbhai Patel !!!

The Greatest Indian

Let us first know how the Greatest Indian was decided. A poll was sponsored by “Reliance media” which was conducted by “Outlook Magazine” in partnership with CNN-IBN and “History Channel”. The poll was conducted from June to August 2012.

Let us know some of the nominees for the poll:-

1. B. R. Ambedkar (1891-1956)

Baba Saheb Ji recognised as “Founding Father of the Republic India” he was a social reformer and the architect of the Indian constitution and also served as the first Law minister of India.

2. APJ Abdul Kalam (1931-2015)

Kalam Ji was involved in the development of India’s first satellite launch vehicle SLV III. He was architect of “Integrated Guided Missile Development Program” he has served as the 11th president of India (2002-2007).

3. Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950)

We all know him as “Iron man of India”. He was a freedom fighter and first Deputy Prime Minister (1947-1950). After Independence Sardar ji (known as Saradar ji for his Leadership) had worked with V. P. Menon towards dissolving 555 princely states into the Indian Union.

4. Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964)

Nehru was the first and longest serving Prime Minister (1947-1964) of India. He himself was prime minister of India when he received Bharat Ratna award.

5. Mother Teresa (1910-1997)

She is well known as “Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta”. She was a Catholic nun and the founder of “Missionaries of Charit”. She was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work in 1979.

Now you are thinking where is Mahatma Gandhi, so it was panel of experts who had not mentioned his name as pre-independence period was dominated by his name and if his name was mentioned in the poll then there would be no competition for others. The panel had focused on modern India and chose “B. R. Ambedkar” as The Greatest Indian on 11th August 2012.
